Madison Bungalow Remodel
Living Room Contractor: Primrose Builders, LLC of Belleville Wisconsin When my clients purchased this bungalow-style home on Madison's east side, it had been divided into two apartments: one on the ground floor and one on the second floor. They chose to return it to a single family home, doing extensive remodeling of both levels. Two of the main projects involved renovating the kitchen and creating a more open floorplan by opening up walls between the kitchen, living room, stair and a former bedroom. A redundant door between the kitchen and stair was closed off to create more room for cabinets on the east side of the kitchen. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was opened up so that the kitchen no longer feels shut off from the rest of the house. The existing sink was replaced with a farmhouse sink, the range and refrigerator were moved to better locations, and a narrow dishwasher was added. The transformation was completed with stylish new cabinets, appliances, countertops, hardware, subway tile on the walls and ceramic tile on the floor, all selected by the owners. The lilac walls were painted a subtle shade of gray for a sophisticated feel. During remodeling, the existing brick chimney was exposed to add color, texture and a hint of the house's history. The new kitchen manages to look clean and contemporary without feeling out of place in the historic home. In phase two of the remodel, a former bedroom at the front of the house was opened up to the living room, and the entry door was relocated there to create an entry hall with coat closets flanking a window and bench. The change not only gives the house a more generous entry with dedicated coat closets but also freed up space in the living room for more seating. The wall between the living room and this new entry hall was opened up, as was the wall between the stair and the entry hall, creating better flow and views between the spaces. The wood stairs were refinished, paneling was stripped from the stair walls and replaced with drywall, and new trim was added to match the original trim. New contemporary furnishings and light fixtures selected by the owners look perfectly at home in this new / old space. |
